Two decades after its founding, the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame & Youth Foundation (FCSHOFYF) continues to show the Fairfield County, Connecticut area that a healthy lifestyle can also be one filled with fun and joy. What began as a localized effort to promote countywide tourism has become the go-to nonprofit for community wellness and youth fitness initiatives.
“We aim to teach kids that staying active is about more than just workouts. It’s about confidence, building teamwork skills, making new friends, and, above all else, having fun,” says FCSHOFYF Executive Director Tom Chiappetta. The Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame & Youth Foundation continues to carry out the group’s original mission by helping young people discover the indisputable link between personal development and an active lifestyle.
Inspiring healthy living from a young age
When Chiappetta and his team first formed the FCSHOFYF as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, they did so on a platform of being the number-one resource for health, wellness, and sports for Fairfield County, Connecticut, youth fitness. As the team has continued to expand on that platform, they have added events, initiatives, and partnerships that have helped them reach area youth and provide them with the guidance, skills, and equipment they need to make getting active not only easy but fun.
“We brought together an incredible group of local experts,” Chiappetta explains. “The collaboration has allowed us to partner with youth organizations and connect them with the people and the resources that can really make an impact.”
Among the experts are youth mentors, trainers, athletes, coaches, and educators who have helped establish sports clinics, workshops, after-school sports activities, and panel discussions on a wide variety of youth sports-related topics. Gradually, the teams the FCSHOFYF has assembled have been able to give back in bigger and better ways, including funding athletic initiatives that have reached families in the wider Fairfield County area who needed them the most.
One of the initiatives Chiappetta is most proud of is the group’s earliest — a program that provides gently used sports equipment to youth sports programs most in need.
“We are the number-one resource for collected sports equipment in the area, by far,” says Chiappetta. “We take the donations we get and get them out into the community, and at times directly to young, underserved individuals. Even if that is the only thing we did, I would be immensely proud.”
Partnerships that help local youth athletes succeed through physical fitness
Through its Chelsea Cohen Fitness Academy umbrella program, named for its first Courage Award recipient, the FCSHOFYF has worked with countless partners in the county. Longtime collaborations include partnerships with the Cardinal Shehan Center in Bridgeport and The Carver in Norwalk.
As the organization grew, the nonprofit also secured a key building block by forging a significant sponsorship with Stamford Health, the largest medical group in that city, allowing it to expand its offerings and help more local youth discover the value of athletics and overall health. Leadership of the medical group helped provide the FCSHOFYF with valuable resources and materials, allowing local mentors, educators, and coaches working directly with the nonprofit to reach more kids in the region.
Additionally, through its partnership with The Carver, a youth-focused community center that provides after-school activities and camps for local children and teens, the FCSHOFYF provided initial funding to launch a leadership initiative focused on encouraging physical and mental wellness among young women. The program motivates girls from middle school through high school to grow as leaders in their communities and to serve as positive role models for their peers beyond the gym.
Chiappetta smiles when he reflects on the impact the partnership has had. “We’d never, for example, claim credit for the Norwalk High School girls’ basketball team winning the state championship — which they did a few years back,” he says. “But we’re proud to have helped open doors and create opportunities that contributed to their success. In some small way, we’re part of their story.”
Looking forward to a future of supportive strength for local youth
The FCSHOFYF wants to continue to educate more kids in the Fairfield County area that fitness and fun can go hand in hand. They know that physical activity can not only offer significant health benefits but also help support mental wellness. The healthy body, healthy mind equation is always at the forefront of all the group’s activities.
In 2026, the FCSHOFYF aims to help approximately 25 different charities, many of which are centered on supporting youth programs in need, particularly for young girls and women. The organizations are spread across the county and represent every demographic. In the past two years, the FCSHOFYF has donated $120,000 to nearly 20 different youth groups in 10 separate communities.
To help clear the way for this important work, the FCSHOFYF anticipates some generous grants and donations in the year to come. Yet, even as they continue to fundraise, the team remains grounded in their original mission to promote healthy living and provide access to the rewards of sports participation, especially for Fairfield County youth.
Through expert input, strong partnerships, and generous donations and scholarships, the FCSHOFYF strives to continue being a driving force in Fairfield County, leading area youth to the information and inspiration they need to live healthier — and more impactful — lives.
